Management is Positional; Leadership is Personal

30-Jan-2014

Dear Friends,

Last week I said management is positional. Leadership is personal. All human endeavors require management—many excel at the science of getting things done, using metrics and complicated processes to insure tasks are accomplished. But we don’t follow management…we follow people we trust.

We don’t trust a leader whose core is breeched through selfish use of power, narcissism, arrogance, lack of authenticity, dishonesty and dismissiveness. We follow with abandon those leaders who have an intact core.

Great leadership is a result of the person inside us, and, to make an impact, we must build safeguards into our lives to guard our core. Otherwise we too will succumb to the deleterious effects of power, influence, and wealth or some combination of these potentially corrosive elements.

Leadership is the most important issue of our time, and studies show that we are losing confidence in our leaders. I wrote the new book, Impact, Great Leadership Changes Everything because the world is desperate for leaders who have an intact core.
